These days we really don't give much consideration to people that are not experimenting with their own systems at home. The more you can show initiative and desire to be more than book-learned the more attractive you are to an employer. People that do a lot of programming/design work at home for personal projects, or have built their own systems or network, etc. show they can apply what they were taught. Certainly any job experience (even voluntary) helps also. To me, doesn't matter what the school is, we are looking for people that can prove they can use what they were taught. Degrees, certifications on their own are only useful for new employees we want to invest training on. Maybe, it depends on what they have done outside of the “school”.
