I’ve worked in the IT departments of several schools and boarding schools. I was also a programmer for several years. The most important thing is to find out which boarding schools teach programming at all.

It seems to me that public schools seem to have Mac’s while private schools seem to have PC’s. Maybe it’s the cost difference, but no matter what computers they use, the programming is really based on languages used rather than the target computer. (See http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-109640.html)

Even the tools used for programming are pretty much the same from Mac to PC, so I would look for a school with a good computer science/ programming program.

I work for a troubled teen boarding school in Utah called Diamond Ranch Academy. In this environment the students use PC’s but since students are focused on catching up in school, and many have gotten into trouble with computers (facebook, myspace, etc.) programming isn’t an option.
