The Roslyn Union Free School District

The Roslyn Union Free School District, a part of the Long Island Schools, is composed of five schools: a pre-kindergarten to first grade school; an elementary school with first to fifth grade; a second elementary school with second to fifth grade; a middle school with sixth to eighth grade; and a high school. The Roslyn Union Free School District serves Long Island’s north shore of the Long Island School District. This school district has an enrollment of around three thousand five hundred students. The Long Island School District and specifically the Roslyn Union Free School District has a strong dedication to preparing all students for life in the twenty-first century.

This school district provides a strong science and technologically based education. All students receive computer education in all grades from kindergarten to twelfth grade. As a result the Roslyn Union Free School District has had semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search every year for the past twenty-four years. The school district also has programs in the application of science to the real world. Like all schools in the Long Island School District, the Roslyn School District often seeks additional or outside funding to make their programs a reality. One such source is F.A.S.T. or the Foundation for the Advancement of Student Technology.

The Foundation for the Advancement of Student Technology

The Foundation for the Advancement of Student Technology is a not-for-profit organization that, in close cooperation with the school district, works to increase the Roslyn School District’s technology education program. This organization also aims to create connections between the school district, local Long Island businesses and the community. The Foundation for the Advancement of Student Technology raises funds by holding various kinds of fundraisers and some technological based events. The Foundation for the Advancement of Student Technology has successfully raised over one hundred fifty thousand dollars for the Roslyn School District’s computer and technological education programs.

F.A.S.T.’s Golf and Tennis Classic

One such fundraising event is the annual Foundation for the Advancement of Student Technology Golf and Tennis Classic. The fifth Foundation for the Advancement of Student Technology Golf and Tennis Classic was held on June 12th at the Glen Head Country Club. Over the past five years F.A.S.T. has used the Golf and Tennis Classic to fund and support computer related projects and district wide technology based educational seminars.

The Foundation for the Advancement of Student Technology Golf and Tennis Classic is a day long tournament that includes brunch, lunch, cocktails, full course dinner and a silent auction. Every year there are over two hundred participants. The event as recently renamed in memory for Glenn Steinfast, a former news anchor and long time F.A.S.T. supporter.

An additional fundraising effort is the Foundation for the Advancement of Student Technology’s Discount Card which is purchased for around $20 and gives discounts to local businesses in the Roslyn Union Free School District, part of the Long Island Unified School District. The proceeds from the purchased Discount Cards go toward funding the development of computer education.

One of the most popular museums in the world is the Museum of Science and Industry, a highlight of any student visit to Chicago.

The museum, created as a vehicle for public science education , is unique in that it was one of the first ever to involve industry in its exhibits.

One of the key initiators of the concept was Julius Rosenwald, chairman of Sears Roebuck & Company, who in 1911 brought forward the idea of a museum for “industrial enlightenment.” Rosenwald, who had visited a museum of this type in Germany, enlisted the aid of other business leaders. Twenty-two years later, in 1933, the Museum of Science and Industry, housed in the restored Palace of Fine Arts from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, opened to the public. It remains the largest science museum of its type in the western hemisphere which is housed in a single building.

Central to the interest and success of the museum is its hands-on exhibits (it has more than 800 in total) with more than 2,000 interactive displays, and a collection of more than 50,000 artifacts.

Highlights of the museum include a working coal-mine shaft elevator from 1933, a WWII U-505 German submarine that visitors can walk through, a center on virtual reality and computer imaging, a baby chick hatchery, an F-14 flight simulator, a restored Pioneer Zephyr train, and an Omnimax Theater.

Groups visiting the Museum of Science and Industry take advantage of the numerous demonstrations. Students and teachers experiencing the working coal-mine shaft elevator will learn about the coal industry in America, which continues to remain an important part of the U.S. economy. Fascinating facts are revealed to give students a new appreciation of that importance.

The German U-Boat exhibit came to be after the vessel was disabled and captured off the west coast of Africa in June 1944. It remains the only U-Boat in the United States and serves as a memorial to the 55,000 American sailors who lost their lives on the high seas during World War II.

In the IMAGING: Tools of Science feature, a series of exhibits illustrate the use of computer-based imaging technology in the fields of medicine, science, law enforcement and entertainment.

IMAGING: The Tools of Science encompasses more than 7,000 square feet of exhibit area and includes a 600-square-foot hands-on Mystery Lab space for use by school groups and museum visitors.

In the Thermographic Portal, visitors can stand in front of an infrared camera and see how computer imaging detects and displays the warm and cool areas of the body. Not far away, they are also invited to add their faces to the computer’s database and witness how computers can color, mix and contort their facial features. There are also a variety of hands-on imaging activities that explore medical technology. The Mediscan unit shows how modern imaging technology helps diagnose and ‘treat’ patients. The Be a Brain Surgeon unit will have students taking turns “diagnosing” a patient’s brain tumor and eradicating it using computer-aided radiosurgery.

The IMAGING exhibit’s Mystery Lab helps solve mysteries by applying imaging technology to forensic science. School groups can participate in the Mystery at the Museum Learning Lab by making advance reservations with the museum’s education department.

Several other displays and exhibits make up the Museum of Science and Industry. They include Animated Industrial Gears, originally on display at the Century of Progress Exhibition held in Chicago in 1933, Genetics: Decoding Life, the Chick Hatchery, the Apollo 8 Command Module among others.

One of the most popular museums in the world is the Museum of Science and Industry, a highlight of any student visit to Chicago.

The museum, created as a vehicle for public science education , is unique in that it was one of the first ever to involve industry in its exhibits.

An online accredited college degree program allows you to take individual online college courses and to get an impressive college degree, without having to attend on-campus classes.

These programs are ideal for non-traditional adult students, who can study at their convenience, while meeting their work and family responsibilities. They get a second chance to complete their college education and to acquire a degree that will add to their career portfolio.

You can join an online accredited college degree program and get a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or Doctorate in a subject of your choice. Some of the popular subjects are business, information technology, computer science, education, psychology, social work, counseling and journalism.

Many students prefer to join professional certificate programs in subjects like stress management, security management, law enforcement and public health nursing, that will help them in their careers.

What you need to consider before you sign up

Before you join an online accredited college degree program you need to be sure about your personal goals and how an online college degree will help you to reach them. If there is a clearly defined benefit that an online college degree can provide, like a pay raise, promotion or a better job, you must go ahead and join the course.

A college degree doesn’t come cheap and you need to carefully weigh the costs and benefits of joining an online accredited college degree program. Find out if your employer offers some type of tuition assistance as an employee benefit.

You need the support of your family and employer and be prepared to find time to work on the online degree program, in spite of having a packed schedule. You must be fully committed, have a positive attitude and believe that you can succeed through your own efforts.

Two-year schools offer associate degrees and certificate programs, while four-year schools and universities provide bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Two-year schools are suitable for students who are very concerned about the cost and are not sure of their long-term goals or academic capabilities.

Four-year schools are suitable for students who are clear about their goals and are confident about their academic capabilities. Certificate courses are suitable for people who want to update their work skills, while degree courses are suitable for people who require an advanced degree and want to enter a professional field.

Institutions offering accredited online college degree programs

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) offers several online bachelor’s degrees and undergraduate certificates. It is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Philadelphia.

The University of Phoenix Online is the nation’s largest, accredited private university. It is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Before you sign up for an online accredited college degree program, you must be clear about your career goals. Look for a school and a program that will help you to achieve what you want and be fully committed to success.
