We all deal with them, those little computer problems that aren’t quite big enough to warrant a call to the Computer Guy. You know, like every once in a while your camera won’t transfer its pictures the right way. Or like the times when all of a sudden your computer shuts down for no apparent reason and with no warning whatsoever. Don’t forget those odd “Run Time Errors” with the crazy numbers in them. I love those.

The worst part is, you could probably fix some of these things yourself if you just had a little help or guidance. Calling a professional, while sometimes necessary, can be both a greater inconvenience and of course a greater cost. It may take forever to contact them, and when you do get in touch with the help desk, they always make you reboot the thing twelve times before you get any real advice.

Let me be clear on a couple things before we continue. First, I am a professional computer technician and have been working in the industry for over 15 years. There are numerous occasions where a professional is needed to help with or repair your PC. It is often my advice to have your system evaluated at least one every three months. On top of that, there are many things a novice should not try on their PC for fear of causing more harm than good. Not everything is this way though.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Your best way to help maintain your computer is by staying informed and educated. I’m not suggesting everyone run out and get a Computer Science degree, but I am suggesting you use some of the top notch free resources that are available to you. The largest these days is of course the internet.

Don’t get nervous yet, I’m not suggesting you look up some super hi-tech article and study it until you know it inside and out. You don’t have to. The net is full of people who already understand these things and are more than willing to pass some of that understanding on to you. They do this in forums.

Forums are a wonderful thing. A lot of forums are actual cyber communities of people who love to talk about various topics. They have people of varying skill sets, all interacting in a friendly supportive way. I know there’s a free computer support forum out there with people in it just waiting to answer some of your questions.

So next time those pop ups are driving you crazy, and you can’t reach your favorite help desk, stop by a computer support forum. You’ll be surprised at how good an experience it can be.

You may have heard people voicing the assumption that the people who are making money online with their own home internet business, are computer geniuses who have some sort of gift for technology and/or business management. Well, even if you HAVE heard that rumor, it’s simply not true!

Many of the people who are most successful with their own internet business make money online by being able to be smart, work hard, and follow instructions, and not because they are particularly adept in writing computer code. In fact, a computer science degree is NOT a prerequisite for creating a successful home internet business.

Home Internet Business Beats The Cubicle!

People are now looking every day for alternative earning opportunities as they grow tired of working in a cubicle, factory line, or other unfulfilling position that seems to leave them consistently short on both time and money.

One of the best ways to do this is to look for a home business opportunity that takes full advantage of the internet, which can be run either part time or full time, depending on the entrepreneurs level of commitment.

Why Technology And The Internet Matter

The home business opportunity is strengthened immeasurably by the use of modern tools like the computer and the internet. Even better, these tools have already been created and are not something that needs to be developed by a business owner. They are, essentially, plug and play!

Almost anything that needs to be done to manage a business can be done quicker and smoother (and with less effort) on the internet, so it makes sense that the web should become a part of the business plan.

Why It Is Better To Work From Home

Aside from the chance to make your own money and not rely on a paycheck from another person, working from home also frees up a lot of time, effort, and worry. Stresses like commutes to work, annoying colleagues, and rigid work days fall by the wayside in favor of a home-based office, your choice of the people with whom you choose to work, and a far more flexible schedule!

On the other hand, a home based business does require some personal responsibility and dedication, since there is no boss peering over your shoulder. But even so, the opportunity of creating a viable and profitable home based business is one of the most freeing things about the internet as a whole!

People who want to learn how those with an internet business make money online from a home office should pay close attention to the details and tips available at www.JohannesBreytenBach.com.

Employers have said that they are more likely to be 12 percent more graduates this year than last year. It is the first projected increase since the year 2000. In another study, a projected 60 percent of US Business plan to employ the same number of graduates this year as with last year. That is an increase of fifty-five percent from last year, according to the CERI (Collegiate Employment Research Institute) at MSU. According to recent studies, US Corporations and businesseswill employ more graduates with a bachelor’s degree in business, biological and physical sciences. Those with construction management, engineering degrees, health care and accounting will also experience an increase in hiring. Other fields will have a slight decline. On the average, companies are hiring forty three percent of its interns to fulltime and regular status. The expected increase in the hiring of graduates coincides with an expected growth forecast of the economy next year according to a recent survey by the Federal Reserve Bank. A lot of companies are coming out of a slump and are now hiring their interns and looking for more. A lot of companies are posting jobs and coming into different campuses. Most experts advise that during the holidays, whether you’re looking for permanent employment or internship, it is time to step up your search. Take advantage of the holiday events you’re going to, discuss what you’re looking for and your goals. Businesses don’t want to be flooded with calls and faxes of resumes. They will probably rely on word-of-mouth to get a handful of candidates The holidays are a perfect time to network. What to expect: Companies will hire more students earning bachelor’s degree in business and management, physical and biological sciences. Engineering, health care and accounting degrees also would experience an increase. Other degrees will experience a decrease in hiring Businesses expect to employ about the same volume of MBAs this year as last year. Businesses have found employees with bachelor’s degrees being able to do some work being done by MBAs. It will be harder for graduates with computer science degrees to find Work. Companies are more likely to employ students who have undergone internships. The work experience, they say, makes a lot of difference. Federal agencies will employ more graduates but not nearly enough to offset the decrease in hiring by the state and local government agencies. On average, starting salaries will increase by 1 to 2 percent.

Us baby boomers’re going to shake up the world in retirement, and so we better get ready. The first baby boomers become eligible for (early) Social Security retirement benefits in 2007.

Those of you who really want to change to a computer career, now’s your chance.

In the years to come, large numbers of boomers are going to leave the workforce. Many of them, I believe, will simply change from full time jobs they hate to full or part time careers they enjoy.

Many boomers are going to leave the IT industry in huge numbers. Who will replace them?

In many cases—other baby boomers.

According to a recent article in the Salt Lake Tribune, the number of new Computer Science degree majors is dwindling. So many in the young generations are going into other fields.

And sure, a lot of routine technical work is going to be outsourced to India and other low-wage countries. That’s inevitable.

But who’s going to tell the outsource contractors what to do?

Somebody here in the U.S. and other developed countries must continue to understand enough computer science and technologies just to organize the projects.

Somebody needs to speak directly with customers and get specifications and feedback.

Somebody needs to help small businesses hook databases up to the Internet.

Computers are fast becoming as common in our society as cars. True, only a handful of top automotive engineers design the automotive breakthroughs for the manufacturers.

And it’s also true that the number of people employed in the manufacture of automobiles has declined by huge numbers in the U.S. and other developed countries. Much (though not all) of that work has been in effect “outsourced” to low-wage countries.

Yet in one way or another, countless numbers of people make their living from automobiles. They sell them, lease them, appraise them and repair them.

I’ve heard that a good auto mechanic who’s certified and up on the latest technologies can command around $100,000.

When you need your head gasket replaced, you can’t send your car to India or Vietnam.

When you need a new motherboard, you can’t send your PC to China.

So the first place to start if you want to change to a computer career now or after you start collecting Social Security and a pension, is with the CompTIA A+ certification for installing, upgrading and repairing PCs.

Other options include:

1. Helping small businesses.

Google and Microsoft won’t hire you, but Joe’s Candles and Gifts needs computers almost as much as large enterprises . . . to store customer data, inventory, sales and all other information. Plus have an interactive web site.

But they can’t afford to hire that kind of full time expertise. Show them how they can save money on inventory, market more effectively, make doing their taxes easier . . . by installing some simple equipment and software and hiring you as their part time consultant.

Charge ten or twenty small businesses to service their networks and other computer operations and you could make some good money.

There’s also security concerns. All networks will be increasingly attacked by hackers. Cracking into a gift store’s network may not be as dramatic as the Department of Homeland Security, but it’ll be far easier, unless you’re there to tell them what steps they need to take to safeguard their data.

The possibilities from helping small businesses with their IT needs are nearly limitless.

2. Sell your own software over the Internet.

Yes, lots of software programming is going to be outsourced. But you can come up with your own idea, write the program and sell it online using just a web site.

3. Hold classes in high tech toys for other senior citizens.

I’ve had a PC and been online for nearly 15 years. Plus I’ve written about various high technologies. So I think I’m up on a lot of computer-type stuff.

But I know zip or close to zip about cell phones, digital cameras, Tivos, high definition TV, chatting online, using laptops in wireless environments, electronic games, iPods and probably stuff I don’t even know that I don’t know.

There’s just too much to keep up with when you’re working full time. I’m sure I’m not the only boomer whose knowledge of the info tech world is limited. But when we have more time and money, we’ll want to check some of these gadgets out.

When you’re collecting a pension and Social Security, you don’t want to work for big name technology companies any more than they want you.

And that’s ok—there’re plenty of smaller companies and people whom you can make a good income from helping with high tech skills.

The most popular online college [...]

Online college degrees are increasingly popular for both traditional students and those who are pursuing higher education while working. The allure can be attributed to a combination of lower costs, convenience (you can attend classes on your own schedule) and the increase acceptance of online college degrees by today’s employers.

The most popular online college degrees tend to be those that focus on a particular professional career or practical discipline rather than more generalized degrees such as those offered by traditional campus-based colleges or universities. There are also a higher percentage of students pursuing associate degrees as opposed to bachelor’s degrees through online learning. Part of this is because many students seeking an online college degree are seeking to enter the workforce as quickly as possible or are already working and want to improve their chances of promotion. Another reason seems to be that online students prefer to obtain associate online college degrees so that they can take advantage of it in terms of a better job, and then continue with a bachelor’s degree while working full time.

Professional Online College Degrees are Industry Focused

Overall the most popular discipline at online colleges is Business Administration. This is a degree that can translate into any number of industries because it is based on business skills and management techniques that almost any type of company can benefit from. Secretaries and lower level employees often study for online college degrees in Business Administration or Business Management so that they are more likely to be perceived as “promotion material.” Another popular degree program is accounting; an associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting is always in demand by companies that are finding it increasingly difficult to find qualified account managers and bookkeepers.

Computer science degrees at all levels are second only to business administration with students pursuing online college degrees. Because the government predicts that the demand for employees with computer programming and database management skills will continue to increase indefinitely, these degrees are an excellent investment in anyone’s future.

Medicine is another industry that is desperately in need of qualified individuals with a degree or diploma in a healthcare related area such as medical reimbursement or healthcare management. With the healthcare crisis now facing the United States, experts in understanding how healthcare insurance works and who can manage facilities seamlessly are in short supply. Online college degrees in this area can take an individual from an entry-level position to management quickly.

Online College Degree Programs Keep Pace with Industry Changes

Online college degree programs keep pace with industry changes and shifts in professional demand because they have certain advantages over traditional colleges. Online colleges don’t need additional space or facilities to add new programs to their curriculum. When they notice an emerging trend, they can offer a new program as soon as they have located and hired the appropriate instructors. These instructors are usually industry leaders themselves, and they are able to provide instruction that covers the most recent innovations in their industry because many remain a part of the industry, something typical college professors aren’t able to do because of scheduling conflicts.

A perfect example of a program that was non-existent a decade ago is Criminal Justice. Students can pursue an online college degree in Criminal Justice from several excellent online colleges. In fact, criminal justice surpassed health care degrees in popularity at online colleges for the first time this past year.
