The computer career options have undergone some major dramatic changes in the past ten years. An extremely rapid growth was experienced prior to the dot com bust. Then it was followed by the leveling off period with respect to the computer jobs. There is a great demand for computer professionals even today. We can say that there is no field without the influence of information technology. Even, students who are graduating form the science and arts streams have to equip themselves with computer knowledge. For example, geological sciences make use of spatial technology for which computer skills and applications are very much needed. Like wise the global positioning system technology is used by law enforcement agencies. It can also be used to track movements of vehicles, locating earth’s resources, movement of flight across the nation etc. The same way, computer technology has also got into the jobs of accountants. Computer jobs are mainly used for reducing time spent on operations and hence such computer skills are very high in demand.

Starting a career in computers can be difficult as many computer jobs call for experience. Hence when starting a career in computer jobs, less importance has to be given to the salary aspect. The more the hands on experience you gain the more the salary earned at a later stage. Sometimes such first time computer job can provide the individual with lot of exposure to the systems side, making him to work on different operating systems, different applications, etc. Qualifications and certifications can be very crucial in landing up on the computer jobs. Almost all the candidates, irrespective of their degrees go through a formal training in computers, making it very tough to have an edge over others. Certifications received from the developers of the computer applications will be considered as an edge over others when searching for a computer job.

While searching for computer jobs, it is good to study in a school or college, which offers job placement assistance. It does not stop with that. The student undergoing a computer course should excel in his studies to get noticed by their trainers, who might have known people in the computer industry and might recommend in getting the first computer job. Also the student should take initiative in asking for placement assistance by getting interviews in reputed companies for good computer jobs.

HOW TO TACKLE THE PROBLEM OF MATHEMATICS IN SCHOOLS

Mathematics in general is construed as a subject which is very difficult and thus students fear this subject resulting in low scores. However the fact is otherwise. In order to tackle this problem, the teaching of mathematics has to change. It should be child centred.

Firstly, the child should be made to master tables up to 19. For this quizzes may be designed by the teachers by dividing the students into two groups and asking tables randomly. A game may also be designed on this and may be played on knockout basis.

Next the child should be made to have command over addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and the BODMAS rule.

It is found that the child gets confused as to whether his/her addition, subtraction etc is correct or not? For this the method of 9’s for checking addition, subtraction and multiplication should be introduced to the students (Details are available in the accompanying CD).

The teacher should divide the students into bright, average and under-achievers. The teacher should make the seating arrangement in his class in such a way that the under-achievers should be made to occupy the first two rows in the class. Each bright child should be made to sit beside each under-achiever and the average students and the remaining bright students should be made to occupy the subsequent rows. In this way the teacher will have an eye to eye contact with his/her under-achievers. Further, the under-achievers will receive a dual guidance while a class is on- one, directly from the teacher and two, from his neighbour who is a bright student. This will certainly help him to learn the topic/subject more effectively.

The teacher while teaching the subject/topic should at no point of time say “This topic is very difficult” or, “This topic can not be learnt easily” so on and so forth as such remarks being highly negative in character, de-motivate the students in general and under-achievers in particular. Thereby they loose interest in the subject as a consequence. Rather if it is really so, then the teacher must devise ways-invent memory aids, codes etc so that the formula can be remembered and the topic may be learnt in an effective way.

The teacher must divide must divide his/her syllabus in such a way that each branch of mathematics is taught alternatively by him/her. For example, in a week the teacher may teach algebra for first two days followed by arithmetic in the next two days and geometry in the remaining days. This way the students will be in touch with all the branches of mathematics. Otherwise, if instead the teacher teaches algebra first, then arithmetic and finally geometry, then, it is every possibility that by the time the teacher finishes geometry, algebra is forgotten by most of the students particularly the under-achievers because, they will have no time to revise what is learnt earlier.

The teacher should teach limited number of concepts in a single period, say one or two only. This will help the average and under-achievers to grasp what is being taught.

The teacher should give few problems say 5 or so in the class to solve and should ensure that the notebooks of the under-achievers be corrected during the same period. Such an exercise should follow the completion of each concept. For this, the teacher should come prepared with the number of questions he/she intends to give in order to test the clarity of a particular concept. Similar problems should be given in home-work and the students be asked to complete the same during the supervision periods as far as possible. The notebooks of the under-achievers should be invariably corrected the very next day. The correction should not be only a mere tick mark to indicate the problem is correct or incorrect, but, it must be thorough. The detailed solution to the problems must be given by the teacher in the notebook(s) of the under-achievers in his/her own handwriting. This will motivate the under-achiever to scan his notebook in detail and not to repeat the mistake in future.

The students should not be rebuked, scolded or ridiculed for providing a wrong answer to a question asked. Rather, he/she should be told that why the answer provided by him/her is wrong and its correct solution. If the student provides partially correct answer, or fully correct answer, he/she should be encouraged by patting, remarks like-very good, well done etc. This will motivate the student to a great extent and encourage him/her to learn more.

The teaching of mathematics should be black-board oriented. The students should be asked to come to the black-board to solve problems frequently. While adopting this practice, care should be taken that the under-achievers are given easy problems to solve, while, the average/bright students should be asked to solve tough problems. This way the students will have much needed confidence-an important ingredient for success in mathematics.

While teaching geometry, the teacher should always use demonstration geometry box where ever needed. The teacher should emphasize the use of sharp and pointed pencils while drawing figures. The use of eraser should be as minimum as possible.

The students must be encouraged to write complete statements while writing answers. Further, they must be told to write the units along side the quantities, while writing answers.

In order to enable students to perform calculations quickly, the students must be taught the methods of calculating squares of two digit numbers, methods of calculating percentages quickly, quick multiplication and quick division etc.

For example, to calculate 10% of a number, just remove a zero or place a zero or place a decimal just before the digit in the units place. To calculate 20% first calculate 10% and then double it and so on. To multiply by 10 just place a zero after the units digit or shift the decimal point one place towards the right and so on.

While taking unit tests the teacher must prepare three sets of question papers, one for bright children, one for average children and one for under-achievers. The result of the under-achievers should not be compared with that of the bright or average children, but, should be compared with the scores of other children classified in their group or with his/her own previous score in tests. This way they will know as to how much improvement they have made without getting de-motivated.

The child who has improved must be praised in the class and given intensives in the form of token gifts. This will pay rich dividends later. The records of their score must be maintained by the teacher.

The teacher must prepare the matrix (marks-sheet question-wise), for under-achievers and analyse the same. This analysis will help him/her to know as to which is the topic the student has not been able to understand. On knowing the same, the teacher must revise the topic for them during supervision classes and re-test the students. Such a process should continue till the student has a considerable hold over the topic.

Role of Remedial Teaching:

In order to improve mathematics, effective remedial teaching is a must. Let us discuss.

Remedial teaching is not re-teaching. Any remedy however costly or sophisticated is useless unless it cures the disease.

A remedial teacher should have a mentality of a sympathetic doctor who has love and care for his/her patients (students).

A. Identification:

a) Through academic achievement:

i) Class interaction: An under-achiever will give wrong answers frequently to the questions asked. He will appear to be confused. He may probably not respond to the questions asked in the class at all.

ii) Home assignment: An under-achiever will not do the homework. If pressurised to complete the work, he may resort to copying, which may be easily detected.

i) Unit tests and term tests: He will show poor performance consistently in tests. He will either not attempt the question(s) at all or, will do cuttings and overwriting. He may even try to copy the solution to the problems from his peers.

b) Through behavioural aspect:

i) Attitude towards academic activities: He will be disinterested in such activities. He will try to refrain himself from such activities. He will try to avoid discussion about academics with his peers or teachers.

ii) Class escapism: He will try to bunk classes for one reason or another. He will give excuses for not attending classes.

ii) Fiddle with notebooks instead of studying: He will be found to fiddle with notebooks and books instead of studying.

Once the under-achiever has been identified, the next step is the diagnosis of deficiencies.

B. Diagnosis of deficiencies:

a) Learning of concepts: His concept(s) related to a particular topic or formula is not clear. For example, the difference between 2×2 and (2x)2 may not be clear to him.

b) Computational Skill: He may not be good at computations and thereby may gives erroneous results frequently while performing basic arithmetical operations and simplification.

c) Procedure of solving problem: He is not clear about the procedure of solving problems and so he/she often gets wrong answers.

d) Application of knowledge: He may not be able to apply the learned knowledge in different situations. For example, in word problems, he may fail to translate sentences into equations or identify the variables.

Once, the deficiency has been diagnosed, let us explore the possible causes for the same.

C. Causes:

a) Memory: Individual capacity of memorising facts and figures.

b) Understanding: Lack of comprehension-he does not follow what he reads.

c) Presentation: Finds difficulty in expressing views-vocabulary is not sufficient.

d) Knowledge Gap: Incomplete coverage units in the previous class-long absence.

e) Parental background: Socio-economic status; education

f) Parental attitude: Indifference of parents towards studies; over-expectation.

g) School Based: Lack of suitable equipment and environment in school-overcrowded class.

h) Medium of instruction: Language problem.

i) Physical factors: Poor eyesight; poor audibility; illness and other problems.

j) Individual factors: Good in oral tests but does not prepare notes and does not do home work regularly; not sincere in studies; very anxious but is unable to concentrate on studies; lacks self confidence; inferiority feeling; fear of failure; wants company of students who avoid classes; emotional instability.

k) Teacher based: Lack of confidence in teacher; lack of time at teacher’s disposal; faulty method of teaching; does not encourage student participation in class; inadequate home assignments and problems for practice; improper way of correction of homework and of guidance to students at appropriate time and stage.; knowledge of the subject is not thorough; unable to clarify difficult concept; lacks in expression; unable to provide secure and affectionate climate in classroom and lack of understanding and acceptance for each individual child.

The causes having known let us now discuss about the possible cures and remedies.

D. Cures and Remedies:

a) Category wise remedial-not more than 5 to 10 students in each class.

b) Personal and individual attention by teacher.

c) No humiliation.

d) Special carefully devised UAA (under achiever’s assignment) – Simpler-Simple-Complex.

e) Read-Re-read-Write-Re-Write-Reproduce-Drill.

f) Group studies; group learning.

g) Micro-notes.

h) Teaching selected portion of syllabus only.

I now propose an action plan to be undertaken by a remedial teacher.

THE ACTION PLAN:

Out of two approaches of evaluation in vogue today, i.e. the process approach focusing on the performance of the teacher and the product approach focusing on the performance of the students with regard to specific objectives-here to get high score in the examinations in terms of marks and subject average, the latter is preferred for sure for obvious reasons. This process is based on the principle that what ever the teacher might have done in the class room is irrelevant unless the objective (of obtaining a high score in the examinations in terms of marks and subject average) is achieved. This then is the primary criteria of evaluation of both the teacher and the taught at all levels.

Herein lies the importance of diagnostic and remedial teaching, which is therefore, the primary responsibility of the teacher. This type of teaching involves:

i) Diagnosis of the specific difficulty of the student by conducting a suitable diagnostic test.

ii) Providing suitable remedial measures

iii) Providing ways and means for preventing them from reoccurring in future.

If a teacher is able to do justice to his primary responsibility then it may safely be presumed that the teaching profession has a bright future in store for sure.

For the benefit of teachers in general, I am now suggesting an action plan on these lines:

a) Be an innovative and imaginative teacher with an open mind.

b) Apply suitable diagnostic test to identify the weakness of each child.

For this split the topic into several subtopics. For example, a topic in class X Mathematics “Linear simultaneous equations in two variables” –solution of equations can be split as:

i) Adding the two equations directly to find the value of the variables.

ii) Changing the sign and adding the equations to find the value of one variable.

iii) Making coefficients equal and using i) or ii) above to find the value of the variables.

iv) Substituting the value of one variable in the equation to find the value of the other variable.

II. . Set at least 20 questions on each subtopic (They should preferably be knowledge based)Take a test of each child. One subtopic to be tested at a time. As far as possible uniformity is to be maintained while evaluating the test. A student scoring less than 35% marks in this test is surely having difficulty in the subtopic.

c) Explore the causes of weakness which may be:

i) Lack of understanding/misconceptions.

ii) Faulty teaching method.

iii) Fear of the subject

iv) Bad work study habits.

v) Physical and emotional factors like poor health, some mental shock etc.

vi) Teacher’s attitude.

d) The cause(s) having been identified, suitable remedial measure (depending upon the cause) should be suggested which may be:

i) Re-teaching of the subtopic—should be resorted to only if the student has completely failed to understand the subtopic due to one reason or the other.

ii) Computer Aided Teaching—should be resorted to if the student has a vague idea about the subtopic and therefore finds it difficult to answer questions relating to it.

iii) Drilling of Problems—Should normally be prescribed to the weak child during examination times. For this the teacher should be able to design an effective study material containing objective questions, knowledge based problems; the practice/drilling of which will cure the weakness.

iv) Other Measures:

The work of the teacher does not end here. He/She must ensure that the student continuously practices upon them to ensure that the weakness does not reoccur in future.

To conclude, it may be said that this is indeed a gigantic task with immediate rewards a remote possibility; therefore requires zeal, enthusiasm and a sense of commitment on the part of the teacher to undertake this project.

Last but not the least; the institution has to play a pivotal role to achieve the ultimate objective. The difference between supervised study (study under the supervision of a teacher) and remedial teaching be clearly understood. The supervised study time table be framed in such a way that a teacher should be assigned at least two periods a week in Maths, Science, English and Social Studies (the subjects where maximum weakness is found) as is done in JNV Longowal, Distt: Sangrur, Punjab. The teacher on his part should not just while away his/her time but should perform these activities as suggested above in letter and spirit and then and only then the ultimate objective can be achieved. He/She must remember that if a student fails then: the teacher has failed; the examination system has failed; the evaluation system has failed and by and large the education system as a whole has failed.

Let us now discuss as to how mathematics teachers can help students improve in problem solving?

A teacher can help students become oriented to problems by teaching them the meaning of the problem. He/ She is a psychology teacher. Orientation to problems depends up on a well organised body of knowledge pertaining to a problem. Individual differences exist in problem solving. He can encourage them to verbalize; diagrammatize; and construct models. The teacher should try to create a climate in the class friendly to questions. He should tell him not to persist with an unsuccessful search model. Students should be advised to abandon temporarily the attempt to solve a problem on which they have worked unsuccessfully for a long time and return to it later. Recognition should be given to the student who solves a problem in more than one way and also to a student who is able to find a particularly neat solution.

As the students test hypotheses, some of them ill-conceived, the teacher must be patient and objective least the student test the hypotheses not by trying them out rather by watching teacher’s reactions.

Mathematics derives its main strength from its following features:

1) Abstractness

2) Generalization

3) Logical Consistency

4) Depth

5) Precision

6) Seriousness

7) Elegance

8) Economy of thought

9) Thoroughness

10) Significance

11) Clarity

12) Permanence.

Now, I present some ideas if followed by teachers; students and administration will result in sure and certain improvement in teaching and learning of mathematics.

1) Monitoring of effective teaching and learning of mathematics from class VI itself.

2) Students should write all important formulae chapterwise/topicwise in a separate notebook and repeatedly apply them to solve problems so as to learn them by heart.

3) Mathematics club/Mathematics Laboratory should be formed in the school to promote creative thinking.

4) Methods such as problem solving; question-answer; discussion and demonstration should be used for teaching and learning.

5) Proper method should be carved out to transact difficult; complex; abstract concept in a simple and concrete manner.

6) Teacher should give only a few model solutions on every topic.

7) Students should be made to solve problems by themselves in the class and teacher should hint or prompt only those students who need help.

8) Students should be encouraged to participate maximum in classroom activity.

9) Students should be encouraged to ask questions.

10) Teaching should be made interesting and absorbing.

11) Teachers’ interaction with students should stimulate their adventurous thoughts and divergent thinking to solve a problem in more than one possible ways.

12) Teaching and A-V aids should be used wherever possible for teaching.

13) Clarity of fundamentals and concepts must be ensured at every stage of learning right from class VI.

14) Every student should solve at least 10 different problems by himself every day.

15) Students should practice solving mathematics problems of their own for at least 2 hours every day as a rule.

16) Students should practice enough calculations. They should acquire mastery over quick calculation techniques.

17) Writing skills such as neatness; sped; and accuracy should be developed.

18) Skills to read problems with comprehension and logic should be developed.

19) Home assignments should be preferably typed on a sheet and every student should get a sheet of assignment to solve problems.

20) Students should be counselled and explained with reasons why not to copy solutions of homework questions from their friend(s) to enhance learning.

21) Teacher should correct home-assignments properly and promptly and give immediate feedback.(re-enforcement).

22) Exchange of teacher(s) having mastery over topic(s) from the neighbouring JNV’s for a few days should be done to augment instructional inputs.

23) Unit test(s) and term test(s) should be reliable.

24) Evaluation should be done honestly and immediately, clearly pin-pointing mistakes and their corrections.

25) Test should have concept based question(s) as far as possible.

26) Chapter-wise test should be taken during re-vision and proper feedback should be given for improvement.

27) Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) should be done in letter and spirit.

28) Diagnostic remediation should be done timely and immediately after every test, simultaneously teaching and learning of next unit.

29) The Principal and teacher should together talk to the under-performer (achiever) after every test to know his/her difficulty and find workable ways to solve them to build confidence and boost morale of the child.

30) Peer group tutoring for under-achievers can be tried.

31) After every test, question-wise analysis should be done by teachers to short list common and usual mistakes done by the students and their correction should follow.

32) Syllabus should be thoroughly completed as per schedule and intensive re-vision should be taken up for enough practice and assimilation.

33) The teacher should analyse the question matrix to diagnose any flaw with his/her technique and should suitably revise the topic to teach it effectively in future.

34) Absentees in any test should be strictly checked. Any absentee in a test for any reason should be given test as early as possible.

35) Test or examination should be regarded as a compulsion for effective teaching and assimilated learning.

36) Teacher should love and care for every under-achiever; give him individual attention.

37) There should be close rapport between the teacher and every under-achiever. He/She should feel at-ease to approach the teacher to solve his/her difficulty.

38) Teachers and students should be punctual; sincere and regular and work willingly with joy of teaching and learning.

39) Teacher should never discourage any child.

40) There should be good discipline, serene and conducive academic climate pervading in the school.

Role of Reading in Mathematics :

Reading in mathematics play a significant role in improvement of the subject. Let us discuss.

In today’s competitive world, it is said; one must be well read in order to succeed. It is because, ‘it is the basic skill which opens up the window to the world of knowledge which is available in writing form’, according to-“Developing Reading Skills-Series2” a monograph published by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.

At the primary level (up to class VIII), it is agreed that most of the portion consists of problem solving, but even then, importance of reading cannot be undermined. For example, let us consider the statement, “State the converse of Pythagoras theorem”. In case of casual reading, the word “casual” can be overlooked and in that case, the statement supplied shall be just the reverse of what is asked for.

At the lower level,(classes IX to XII), apart from geometry, we require reading in some portions of algebra,mensuration,probability, permutations and combinations etc, else it is too difficult to comprehend the problem, leave alone solving them.

For example, in algebra, the problem can be-“State and Prove the Binomial Theorem for (positive integral index; any index). Now the bracketed part being important here must be carefully read as the statement and conditions of validity of the theorem differ in both cases.

In mensuration, the construction of the correct figure, on which the correctness of the formula to be applied to solve the problem is based, can only be done, when the problem is read carefully. For example, let the problem be-“Calculate the volume of the cylinder with the square base.” A casual reader will just apply ?r2h, r and h having usual meanings, which is an error. In fact the volume has to calculated using the formula (side)2 x h; where “side” stands for the side of a square.

In permutations and combinations, extreme care has to be taken to read a problem to judge whether it is a problem concerning arrangement or selection, as the former is related to “permutations” and the latter is related to “combinations”, and in both the cases, different sets of formula have to be applied altogether.

As for as probability is concerned, the correct solution of any problem requires effective reading and in fact it is the only key to success in this branch.

At the higher level, wherein a student is subjected to a feast of theorems many of them by the same mathematician in one or more branches, a thorough reading is a must or else it may lead to Confusion.

At the research level, reading has no substitute as the technique of reading the research papers only enables one to see what others do at times. Thereby one comes up with a problem to ponder on. Thus reading forms the very basis of research work.

The teachers of Mathematics in the Vidyalayas perhaps fail to take note of this aspect of the subject and train the students for problem solving only. This is to my mind one of the most powerful reasons for dismal performance in the subject.

Hence, efforts should be made by them to see this guide of the problem as well and it is assured that the performance in the subject will improve.

That the students have really improved in mathematics can only be said with certainty if it is verified. The tool for it is the examination. The marks obtained in the examination will certify the claim. Therefore, thorough preparation is a must for examination. As such, I am suggesting certain guidelines which if the examinee follows scrupulously, will surely reap rich harvest in terms of marks.

The guidelines may be divided into two parts: Those which should be followed while preparing for the examination and those which should be followed while writing the same.

Guidelines for preparation:

a) Be a systematic and determined person to have a strong urge to succeed.

b) Check your level of preparation periodically till last moment both topic wise and marks wise.

c) Identify your weak areas and derive strategies to work on them.

d) Give equal importance to all topics

e) Do not waste your valuable time in repeating problems.

f) Revise and re-revise the course focusing on weak areas.

g) Collect the tricky problems and mention their trick (s) against them—frequently revisit these problems.

h) Categories the problems so that you may have command over large number of problems in less time.

i) Utilize each and every second in preparing yourself for the ultimate ordeal.

Guidelines for writing the Examination:-

a) Revise each problem carefully after solving it.

b) Attempt a problem after reading it at least twice. Check whether you have copied down the problem correctly before attempting it to solve.

c) Attempt first your familiar and precise problems practiced thoroughly.

d) Next, do the problems which appear solvable. If you fail to do the problem in your fist attempt, revise it at once. Do it as rough work (provided you are sure that your method is correct). In this way you will be able to complete most of the problems.

e) Next, attempt the problems which are unknown to you write whatever you know about the problem e.g. the formula to be used, first few steps of its solution etc.. This will fetch you extra marks.

f) Finally always keep some time for final revision and you must invariably revise the whole paper before submission. This helps you to detect minute mistakes which might have gone unnoticed in the absence of such a revision.

g) Always maintain neatness while writing the answers as this will have a very favourable impression on the examiner.

h) If you do proper study and still the question paper appears to be tough you must understand that the same must have been felt by al the examinees appearing in the examination. You should not therefore be nervous. What you should have to be cautious about is that no mark is deducted from your solved problems.

i) Never resort to copying in the examination as this will have a telling below on your self-confidence which will not be in god stead for you.

Finally, you must know that the paper is set in such a way that it can be completed in 3 hours time by an above average examinee. Therefore, one must not worry unnecessarily about the myths that the paper was lengthy, it involved lot of calculations, the paper was tough etc.

This school is funded by the government and it assist Achiase community. This placement needs the volunteers because to Change in knowledge(different ideas) need volunteers to help in KG-JSS3 need volunteers because too many students than teachers .

Volunteers must be of age 18 or above with minimum education of high school. This placement does not need any volunteers in the month of Apr and Aug. Volunteers with the following special skills are preferred for the placement:-

Volunteers can assist by doing following tasks:-

Kumasi is the second largest city in Ghana, and the capital of the Ashanti Region.Achiase is about 45 mins drive from Kumasi. The city is buzzing 24 hours a day, and is home to the large Kejetia Market.

Traditional Ashanti pride is much more prominant in this area, and volunteers are likely to see more cultural dress and practices during their stay. Kumasi is a hub for travellors planning on going in any direction in Ghana, and has good transportation (bus or tro-tro) to all major cities.

Over 500 fascinating exhibits are displayed for the general public to see, learn and understand through hands on experience at the Hong Kong Science Museum, located east of Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, in the Kowloon peninsula. It is also located near the Museum of History. The museum is a one way ticket to insight on a wide range of science-related subjects and technology.

The museum can be reached by taking the MTR from Tsim Sha Tsui Station Exit B2 and walking along Cameron Road towards East Tsim Sha Tsui for about 8 minutes. The Hong Kong Science Museum is opened to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1pm to 9pm and is closed on Thursday (except on public holidays) and the first two days of the Lunar New Year. Constructed in 1990, the four-storey building of the museum has 16 separate gallery spaces.

The 22-metre-high twin-tower Energy Machine is the highlight of the museum which produces spectacular audiovisual effects displaying various forms of energy. Another popular attraction among kids is the car which can be driven in almost real simulation. The museum also enlightenes the visitors in fun and interactive methods on subjects of communication, food, magnetism, light, motion, mathematics, computers, transportation and sound. The museum also consists of a lecture hall, a laboratory, a gift shop, a computer classroom, a resource centre, a cafeteria and a book shop. The centre also organizes special workshops extension activities and educational programmes based on various science topics for the public. Guided tours will help you with explanations on the exhibits and assist you in operating exhibits. There are different guided tours to suit the handicapped, elderly, group visitors and school students.

Colegio San Francisco de Asis(high school) is located on the small island of Santa Cruz in the spectacular and historic Galapagos Islands. Citizens of the Galapagos islands are often isolated from educational opportunities because of their physical distance from the mainland. Learning English is a very important economic tool for the habitants of the islands in order to participate in the local and tourist economies and improve their quality of life. The school educates children and teenagers and prepares them to be savvy protectors of their local environment which is the principal attractio Volunteers must be of age 24 or above with minimum education of high school. This placement does not need any volunteers in the month of Jan, Feb and Mar.

Volunteers with the following special skills are preferred for the placement:- Child & Youth Worker Leadership Programming Social Work Student General Administration Teacher – English Teacher – Math Teacher – Science Teacher – Geography Teacher – Environmental Science Teacher – Physical Education TEFL Certificaiton / Training Handicraft Design Computers – MS Office Software Soccer Basketball Educational Games Guitar Piano Drums Teacher – Social Science Teacher – Commerce, Finance, Business Teacher – History

Acing a grad school presentation is a no-brainer. The key to getting the grade you want is preparation.

Know the guidelines of your presentation. Who is your audience? Will it be your fellow students? If so, tailor you presentation to the age group or types of people you are speaking to. If you’re doing a science presentation to an audience of science students, then you do not have to explain simple theories. Go straight into the meat of your presentation.

Also think about the details of your presentation. What is your time limit? Will the presentation be done in a class setting with no access to computer equipment or will it take place in an auditorium with state of the art gadgets. You must know the context in which you present your findings.

Do your research. Spend time finding interesting articles or books on your topic. Take notes. Do not start outlining your presentation yet. Read through all your notes and let the ideas sink in. Once you’ve read the information, the ideas will start to form in your head. It may take a few days, but you’ll be happy that you stewed in the info first.

Now it’s time to outline your presentation. Think about ways to present the information. You can do it in a formal, analytical way with heading and subheadings or you can try for a more chaotic idea presentation. Think about what will keep your audience interested.

You don’t have to have a rigid outline just make sure that you’re ideas have coherence when strung together. Your presentation has to have a point. As long as your audience realizes the point at the end of your presentation, the ways you use to lead them to the point is all up to you.

Decide if you will use a computer program such as PowerPoint or if you just want to talk at the podium. Utilizing technology can be a good way to keep your audience interested. Visual tools are always great aids in teaching. Take the time to learn the software if you plan to use a computer in your presentation. If you can’t find your way around a computer, don’t use one. You do not want to distract your audience and lose your train of thought by fumbling with foreign equipment.

Always rehearse your presentation before the big day. Practice makes perfect. Stand up and read through your whole presentation in private. This will help you find any awkward sentences you want to change. Practicing will also make you less anxious when it’s time to present your information for real.

Always have a good night’s sleep before presentation day. Eat a good breakfast or don’t if you’re the type to get very nervous. Stay calm and know that you’ve prepared well for the big day. There’s no reason for you not to ace your presentation if you’ve done your homework.

Incorporating Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) in English Language Teaching

Introduction:

The quick development of technology has affected almost every aspect of our lives. It has influenced the efficiency of communication between people as well as the methods of education. The existence of internet, often abbreviated to the Net was and still a revolution in the field of communication and it has recently become an essential element in the field of education. The Net has also become a thriving community with many millions of people exchanging information, ideas and opinions. Hence, for language teachers involved in the communication process on a very basic level, it is the perfect medium. It saves them time and effort and they can quickly and cheaply find almost whatever materials they are looking for. Teachers can also incorporate the use of the Net in their teaching so that they create a motivating atmosphere for their students and they provide them with a special environment where they get connected with their counterparts worldwide.

This paper reports on the importance of integrating new technology by means of using computer-mediated communication (CMC) into classroom instruction. CMC as referred to in this paper is a comprehensive concept that mainly focuses on e-mail, Keypalling and computer conferencing. The paper begins with general discussion of some benefits of using CMC showing examples from previous projects. In the second part, a sample project is proposed to show one possible way of using CMC in language teaching. The last part of the paper gives a rational on the proposed project and reasons for considering the use of Key palling project in the Language Center at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman.

The benefits of using CMC in language teaching and some examples from the previous projects

(CMC) Computer Mediated Communication is defined as human interaction via computer networks and in online environments (Shulman, 2000). It is also an interdisciplinary mix of communication, technology, education, and journalism (ibid). The term (CMC) was first invented and coined by Hitz and Truff (1978) in their study of computer conferencing (Murray, 2000). Since then, the use of CMC has been developing in the field of ESL and EFL and it has become very popular during the 1990s due to the increasing use of the Internet in educational institutions.

Many educators now are making computer networks a part of their students’ learning experience (Bruce, 1991 cited in Liaw, 1998). The computer learning networks are based on several types of computer mediated communication. These can be generally classified into e-mail, synchronous and asynchronous conferencing (Warschauer et. al. 1996; p. 2). Email is considered asynchronous since the recipient doesn’t have to be on-line but can read the message later. In asynchronous conferencing the message is sent from one person to many recipients. There are two types of this; discussion lists which allow one message to be sent to thousands of e-mail addresses; and bulletin boards that allow a message to be posted in a central place where many people can access and read it. In synchronous conferencing, however, the message is sent instantly between one person and a group of people who are all on-line like what happens in the chat rooms.

ESL and EFL teachers have used CMC in many different ways and for many purposes. So many studies and research have acknowledged the use of internet in general and CMC in particular. Therefore, some teachers have implemented CMC projects locally within one group of students or between two groups in the same institution, and some others have chosen to find partners nationally or most popularly internationally. There are lots of sample projects in which CMC was used and proved successful. Looking at some of these projects we can identify some of the major advantages of using CMC with language students. The following are some of the main ones:

1. Developing language skills and critical thinking:

Computer-mediated communication seems to promote the development of language skills. As far as writing is concerned, CMC is particularly important if we are to introduce the students to the writing skill as a process. The traditional classroom environment doesn’t usually allow enough opportunity for students to discuss their written work and give feedback to each other. Computer-mediated discussions, however, provide the students with this opportunity. Leppanen and Kalaja (1995) found that engaging students in on-line discussions on their written assignments improved their written skills. They developed an ability of managing whole meaningful texts and also learned to look at their work from different perspectives. Some other studies found that students work harder when writing to real reader, for example, Fedderholt (2000) and therefore their skills improve dramatically. In another kepalling project initiated by the British Council between primary level pupils from two schools in Singapore and Birmingham, students proved to be more motivated and displayed a positive attitude towards writing (Ho, C.M. 1997). Moreover, analysis of the electronic messages also showed a maturity in pupils’ cognitive development and thinking skills over time in the type of questions posed (ibid). It has also been claimed in another study that kepalling helps to develop general study skills and critical thinking (Roberts, Rice and Thorsheim 1994, cited in Choi and Nesi, 1998).

With regard to reading, the students get enthusiastic to read what their key pals have written for them and hence they develop a sense of reading for interest. Choi 1998, shows that children’s reading skills improved greatly as a result of exchanging e-mails with their key pals. Qualitative studies in several online classrooms have described how students’ reading and writing processes became more collaborative and purposeful as students engage project-oriented research and writing for real audience (Barson et al , 1993, cited in Warschauer 1996).

Several studies also show that students speaking skills improve when engaged with activities based on CMC. Chun (1991) found that computer communication proved itself as a medium for facilitating the acquisition of interactive skills in speaking. Barson et al (1993, cited in Warschauer 1996, p.6) show that when they combined computer communication with a task-based approach to language learning, it did not only enhance interaction via computer but also resulted in a very active verbal collaboration as well.

2. Creating real natural atmosphere for learning the language and increasing the students’ motivation

One of the very important features of CMC is that it provides the students with authentic opportunities for real natural communication. This authentic sense of language communication requires students not only to read and write, but also to respond to the writing of others, which fosters a sense of personal engagement and discovery essential to successful language learning (Peterson, 1997). Therefore, it creates optimal conditions for learning to read and write, since it provides an authentic audience for written communication. Li (2000; 230) states that: ‘writing via e-mail creates authentic purpose and audience for writing, which are elements often lacking in the traditional writing classes’. Indeed when the student know that what they are writing is going to be read by interested readers, this gives them motivation not only to write but also to improve their writing so that it will be interesting and understood by their readers. Giving the students the opportunity to practice their language in authentic setting also improves their communication skills. Lin Ho (1997) claims that her students’ communication skills improved as a result of working collaboratively on a project with a class from another country via e-mail. In a similar study, Liaw (1998) noticed good improvement in her students’ communication skills.

Some research suggest that online learning activities are generally quite motivating for language learners, in part because learners feel they are gaining technical skills which will prove beneficial in the future (Warschauer, 1996). Learners are also motivated by the opportunity to work collaboratively in groups and create their own projects that reflect their own interests. Moreover, being involved in some CMC activities like kepalling develops the learners’ sense of awareness of the intercultural concerns, and of their being part of dynamic, international, global community which in turn, motivates them even more and raises their curiosity to know more about the cultures of their key pals.

3. Encouraging students’ autonomy and improving their learning skills

Warschauer (1995, cited in carrier, 1997, p284) claims that one of the benefits of e-mail is that it empowers students for independent learning. When integrating CMC in language instruction, the teacher is no more the central focus in the learning process. Instead the students themselves become responsible for their learning. Warschauer et al points out that: ‘the opportunity for students to communicate with each other, inside or outside the class, can create a new social dynamic based on student-student collaboration, with the teacher as facilitator. The teacher, therefore, is not seen as the provider of knowledge as it is the case in the traditional setting, but he is helping the students to learn and monitor their learning. In a study conducted by Leppanen and Kalaja (1995), on using computer conferencing for introducing writing as a process, they found that students dominated the discussion and gave each other a great deal of feedback of different kinds (see appendix 1 for sample discussion messages). Paramsks, (1993, cited in Warschauer et al 1996) sees that when the CMC projects are conducted in an international setting, they enhance students’ autonomy even more than when conducted locally.

Lin Ho (1997) and Shulman (2000) reported on two different projects between international groups of students and both of them showed that the students’ autonomy had increased dramatically during the projects. This autonomy that students gain has the potentiality of developing their learning skills and critical learning perspectives. Boirsasky (1990, cited in Warschauer et al 1996, p.2) asserts that using CMC helps students become ‘active learners seeking solutions for their problems’.

4. Promoting equality among learners and increasing their participation

In the traditional classroom, many social and personal inequalities effect students’ participation and overall production. There are groups of hesitant students, shy students, and weaker ones who avoid interaction in the class in order not to loose face. CMC, however, has the advantage of overcoming these inequalities through the anonymity afforded by electronic discussions and exchanges. It also reduces static social context clues related to race, handicap etc. (Sproull and Kiesler 1991, cited in Warschauer et all 1996, p.5), it reduces dynamic social context cues such as hesitation (Finholt et all 1986, cited in Warschauer et al 1996, p.6), and it allows students to contribute at their own time and pace (Selfe and Myre 1991, cited in Warschauer et al, 1996, p.6). CMC also tends to feature more balanced participation than face-to-face conversation, with less dominance by outspoken individuals.

Findings of some studies suggest that CMC can be a useful tool for encouraging greater participation of quiet or shy students and for creating alternatives to the traditional “IRF” discourse pattern which dominates most classrooms (Warschauer, 2001). Many other classroom studies have found that students’ participation and written output increased in electronic discussions. Shulman (2000) shows that students who were quiet and reluctant to participate in class were the most active participants in the internet project. Similarly, Hartman et al, 1991(cited in Warschauer 1996, p.6) found that less able and weaker writing students not only communicated more during electronic discussions, they also offered very useful comments to peers and end up producing better papers.

On the other hand though, the CMC can result in some other kinds of inequalities and we, as teachers, should not underestimate their negative effects. Students with dominant personality traits, more computer knowledge, or even better typing skills may take advantage of networks power to control discussions (Warschauer et all p. 1996.p.8). Here comes the role of the teacher to monitor and direct the students’ performance in a way that promotes cooperation rather than competition.

Implementing the project:

1. Pedagogical Implications

There are some pedagogical implications that should be taken into consideration in order to ensure the success of the project. As an example for these implications, teachers who are running the project should know well their fellow colleagues as collaborators in the project and the differing backgrounds of their schools and pupil profiles (Ho, C.M. 1997).This will help a lot in laying the foundation necessary for building up ties for their respective students in the two Universities. Another implication is that teachers in both Universities should clearly work out the specific objectives of the course in order to prevent any overlap of study in the research to be carried out and also clarify how the final outcomes will benefit the pupils in both Universities (ibid). Not only teachers should be aware of the objectives of the course; students need to understand theses objectives as well in order to be fully motivated and involved in the course which will lead them to appreciate the course even more. The students should also be informed about the procedures of implementing the course which in turn, guides and makes clear to them how much time and effort are required at each stage of the project (ibid).

2. Preparing the students:

The students of the two classes are given lessons of how to collect information by the means of questionnaires and interviews and this will be done during the first week (look at Appendix 1 for more information about the timetable of the project). The two teachers decide on the preparation lessons so that both classes are introduced to similar methods of collecting information. The students are also given an introduction about the purpose and objectives of the projects and asked for suggestions. A pre-planned preparation is needed to ensure the success of the project. In this stage, aspects like desk arrangements, teambuilding activities, fulfilling individual roles to meet group goals and timed task should be taken into consideration (Greenfield, Roseanne. 2003).

3. The organization of the class

Each class is divided into four groups so as to facilitate group work and assign different tasks for each group when working on the tasks. There should also be a representative/spokesman for each group who will be responsible for his group and make sure that the work is done on time so as not to cause any inconvenience or difficulties for the key pal partner group. The class configuration will vary each time as to suite the requirements of the activities or tasks being worked on.

4. Group work within each class:

In the first lesson, the teachers of both classes explain the overall project to their students and present the aims and objectives to them so that they are clear about the benefits of the project. The class work starts by introducing the students to different ways of collecting information like questionnaires and interviews. Then, both classes are divided into groups of four and each group should appoint a spokesman or a leader. The teachers explain to the students what they are required to do and teach them how to form appropriate questions to be included in their questionnaires and interviews. Then, the students in each group are asked to prepare a sample questionnaire for certain topics. The groups in both classes are asked to prepare a letter to their counterparts in the other class. In this letter, they should include some background information on the University, course, the students..etc in order to create a kind of rapport with their key pal group partner in the other class.

Then, the teachers should inform each group about the kind of tasks they are supposed to deal with. After the group work is divided, the students start working in their respective groups. As the students will need to look for information about different facilities available in their Universities (like food and bank facilities), they have to meet and work outside the class to discuss their work and make it ready to present in the next session.

In the next session, the students put together the different parts of the whole work. First, they discuss and give feedback on each other’s work, then they organize the layout of they have done. Before sending the final work to the partner class, they show it to the teacher for comments.

More information about the kinds of activities (details on weekly tasks) that would be included in the project is available in the project timetable (Appendix 1).

Rationale:

1. Why conduct the project within Oman?

One of the main obstacles of carrying out key palling projects is finding a partner class. The differences in timetables, educational system, holidays, interest and other problematic issues make it very difficult and often frustrating for any teacher to find a matching class for his group of students. In this project proposal, I managed to find a colleague teacher from a private University in Oman (Called Sohar University) to participate in the project. I have chosen to conduct the project in Oman because it has almost the same benefits for the students of a project in which the other key pal partner is from another country. I am aware that carrying out this project with a class from another country would have provided my students with a new cultural experience and would have broaden their awareness of the life style and educational system of that country. However, still in my context, both classes do not know each other and there are cultural and traditional differences between each and every region in Oman which allows each of the classes to be aware of each others’ way of living, traditions and differences. Moreover, the students of both classes belong to same level of English (intermediate) and they study the same subjects which allow the two teachers to create materials and exercises that serve their students’ needs and at the same time go along with the educational standards issued by the authorities in both Universities. Another reason for conducting the project with an Oman class partner is that students in both classes share a similar background about some common issues related to business in Oman which allows the two teachers to base some of their tasks and examples on the information the students already have.

2. Why is the project integrated within the overall course?

This keypalling project is designed so as to be integrated into an English for Business course and not as separated activity. The decision of getting it integrated in this way is based on some evidence from studies and projects previously conducted. Bruce Roberts, one of the coordinator of International Email Classroom Connection states:

There is a significant difference in educational outcome depending on whether a teacher chooses to incorporate email classroom connections as (1) an ADD-ON process, like one would include a guest speaker, or (2) an INTEGRATED process, in the way one would include a new textbook. The email classroom connection seems sufficiently complex and time consuming that if there are goals beyond merely having each student send a letter to a person at a distant school, the ADD-ON approach can lead to frustration and less-than-expected academic results–the necessary time and resources come from other things that also need to be done. On the other hand, when the email classroom connection processes are truly integrated into the ongoing structure of homework and student classroom interaction, then the results can be educationally transforming. (Warschauer, 1995, p. 95)

What is mentioned above highlights that a keypalling project will likely be most successful when it reflects in-depth planning and integration into the overall course being taught. It also shows that a keypalling project fits especially well with structured, project-based approach which allows learners to engage in increasingly complex tasks throughout a course.

The integration of the keypalling project is achieved through its objectives and through the involvement of students in a variety of tasks and activities in the project. The objectives of the project are chosen so that they match and serve the general aims of the English for Business course. They aim at increasing students’ motivation, promoting autonomy and equality among the students, introducing the students to the skill of writing as a process, and preparing the students for using language for authentic purposes similar to those which exist in the target situation where the students will work after graduation. All of these are important elements in the English for Business course. The timetable shows that the students in each class get involved in lots of classroom discussion and group work. This involves the teacher to monitor, coordinate and offer help when needed by the students. Before the students start the project tasks, the teachers give the students lessons related to the tasks required by the project. Teachers’ involvement is considered to be very vital for the success of this project and without their guidance and the student-centered activities; computers will do little to help students learn English (Berge and Collins 1995, cited in Gitsaki and Taylor, 1999, p. 48).

3. Why is the project conducted in a group-to-group basis?

There are some important reasons why I have chosen to conduct the project in a group-to-group basis. First of all, there are so many problems that are more likely to occur in e-mail exchange project when it is conducted in a student-to-student basis. One of the most common problems is ‘lack of response’ either because of the sudden absence of one of the students or because a student might not be motivated enough by his/her keypal partner. It is also very difficult for a teacher to monitor the work and to offer the same amount of help and advice when the project is done on a student-to-student basis. On the other hand, the previously mentioned problems could be easily avoided when the students are working collaboratively as a class or as groups. Secondly, this project is the first of its kind to be conducted at the Language Centre and therefore, I have decided to start with a less demanding version of it (group-to-group). Once the project has been done and has proven successful, more complex versions will be applied. I have also chosen the group basis because the authority of the Language Centre encourages all the teachers to promote and enhance the group work in their classes. Also, the efficiency of the facilities provided by the Language Centre has not been tested in such a project before, so conducting the project in a group to group basis will give a good opportunity to test them and at the same time it would be easier to handle problems if any of them occur than if the project was done on a student-to-student basis.

4. The Content

From my experience as a teacher and in almost all the classes I taught, I have noticed that students are very much interested in computers and internet and they are highly motivated to work with any project as far as it is related to the internet use. The materials of this project have been developed so as to serve the students needs and to attract them to some new aspects of using the internet in education. Incorporating such materials in the project will encourage the students to learn on their own whenever they use the internet outside the classroom. The Materials have also been designed to raise the students’ motivation to writing by giving them opportunities to write for authentic purposes and real audience. Moreover, the materials promote the idea of writing as a process in that students build their writing step by step making use of the comments and suggestions made by their keypal partners. Also, the materials used in the project and the strategies used to carry out the activities are very much similar to those the students will use in the target working context after graduation. More importantly, the materials help the students to apply their study area knowledge in selecting and organizing the necessary information. They will be working on specific and controlled topics rather than general ones. This reduces the chance of the students copying already-existing information.

5. How the students are assessed?

The students are assessed and given a grade on their performance in the project. The ‘10%’ grade seems fair considering the students work on the several writing and speaking tasks during the project. The project plan shows two methods of assessment. By the first one, sending copies of their work to the teacher, the teacher is able to assess the student’s awareness of the different tasks of the project and how much he/she got involved with them. Moreover, the teacher is able to make a judgment on whether the students’ writing skill has improved or not. On the other hand, the presentations assess the students’ speaking skills. Each student should have taken part in the discussions, weather as a class or in the groups, and by the end; they should have developed some confidence to speak.

6. The strengths of the project

Although this project is going to be carried out and organized between two universities within Oman which might looks like a disadvantage, it is actually one of the strong features of the project. Teachers will have more chances to contact each others by phone or to arrange a meeting in which they organize all the important issues related to the project. They could also do that throughout the project to make sure that everything is fine with both classes and even to suggest changes or new tasks which is really difficult to be done if the project was to be conducted with a class from outside Oman. Moreover, students share a common background and they study the same subjects and this could be made use of by the teachers when planning for tasks or providing examples. More than this is that students might develop friendship with their keypal partners and continue to exchange ideas and plans even after the project finishes which will in turn, contribute to the improvement of their language and their ability to socialize with others using the language. Another important aspect of this project is that it is integrated into the overall English for Business course which makes the students more committed to its tasks. The project also involves much classroom discussion and encourages groups to work independently from the teacher which is again fostering the students’ autonomy and independent learning skills. A third feature of strength, in my opinion, is that the project is conducted in a group-to-group basis, as mentioned above, which could also be a positive characteristic of the project considering its context. The content of the project is another aspect of strength in that it has been chosen to serve the students needs, suite the authority standards, create a real authentic learning environment for the students and to provide the students with learning situations very much similar to what they will have in their target working contexts after graduation.

7. The weaknesses of the project.

Asking the students to work individually would have made it more possible for the teachers to know that students are actually doing what they are supposed to do. Conducting the project in a group-to-group basis however makes that a bit difficult. Teachers would find it easy to know who participates in the class discussion. On the other hand, and since the projects requires the students to work out of the classroom, it would be difficult for the teacher to make sure that all members of a group are actually working unless he asks to see each one’s work every lesson which is time consuming. Another weakness is that students haven’t taken any obvious role in the planning and the designing phases of this project, otherwise, it would have been more effective and appropriate for them.

8. Possible problems

Conducting CMC projects in general and e-mail exchange in particular has some problems in common. It requires a careful pre-plan and a well preparation on the side of students and teachers as well. The following are some examples of the possible problems of e-mail exchange project:

# Technical problems like those related to the internet (the server could be down), the software and hardware of computers, typing and difficulty accessing equipments (Kung, 2000).

# Lack of response

# The partner teacher might not have the same understanding of the nature of the project, and working through differences can cause further delays.

# Difficulties in scheduling the computer labs and difficulties for the students to find computers outside the classroom to continue their activities.

In order to avoid the previous problems, teachers who are involved in the project should contact each other before the project starts. They should work together to arrange the kind of tasks and activities for the project and to set logical and feasible goals for it. They should cooperate throughout the course and try to make the objectives of the project clear to their students. More importantly, they should agree on a unified method of teaching and on a certain pace so that the two classes are working consistently without any delay. With regard to the technical problems or malfunctions, teachers should establish a connection with high tech experts to support them when any problem exists. The teachers should also arrange the schedule of the computer labs so that students could have the chance to work in these labs after the class time in order to enable them to complete their work. Lack of response could be avoided right from the beginning by encouraging the students to know some background information about their keypal partners so that both classes become more motivated and involved in the project. Also, teachers should advice their students to respect their keypal partners and to try to develop friendship with them.

9. Why should Keypalling projects be considered in language teaching at SQU?

Before I became a teacher at Sultan Qaboos University, I was a student in it and I could see how students are obsessed with technology, computers and internet. As students, we found it very difficult to find vacant computers to work on our assignments though there are so many computer labs in the University. All that because most of the students were wasting their times on the chatting programs and the other useless things on the net. After I became a teacher, I was involved in teaching computer skills to the students of Accounting Diploma and I could see how interested they were in the projects we were working on. I think that introducing the students of the Language Centre to the Kepalling project will not only motivate them and improve their computer skills, but will also change their look at the internet so that it becomes an important supporter to them in their education and learning of English Language. The time they have been wasting in the chatting rooms on the Net could be consumed to work on something more useful and fruitful. Moreover, students will learn how to use the internet to serve their own learning and this will not stop at the end of the project; it will rather continue with them for the rest of their lives. Based on this and on the previously given evidence at the beginning of the paper, the authority of the Language Centre may take further decisions on integrating the keypalling project in the courses they provide.

Conclusion:

“Key pals can be an extremely rewarding experience for your students, but don’t expect everything to go well the first time. Just like any other aspect of your teaching, it will take some experience to discover the best implementation for your own curriculum. Even with first-time glitches, however, you can be sure that it will be an experience that your students will not forget. Don’t be surprised to find some students exchanging snail-mail addresses with their Key pals, turning a virtual friendship into an actual one. It happens!”

Computer mediated communication has proven successful in so many studies and projects previously conducted in the field of education. Kepalling project as an essential part of CMC does not only motivate students to take part in their language learning process; it also changes their perception of the internet and provides them with ongoing desires to learn as far as they are using the internet. However, conducting such a project needs a very careful plan and a well preparation on the side of teachers and students. I think that it would really be an extremely useful experience to implement and integrate the kepalling project in the overall English courses provided by the Language Centre at SQU since it has got all sorts of facilities and technical support required for the project.

Appendix 2: B/ Detailed Explanation of some of the lessons

Week Two: Saturday Lesson for SQU Class (Time: 1.30)

1. The teachers in both classes will arrange all the groups so that each group has a partner group in the other class. Each group in SQU class will receive an e-mail from its counterpart in Sohar class. This e-mail will include background information about the students, the university, the subjects, the educational system and the teachers. The aim of this first e-mail is to create a kind of rapport with the other class so that the students are motivated to work with their partner class. It is also meant to help the students in both classes to know some information about their partner class so that they have a kind of background about each other.

2. After receiving this e-mail, the students in SQU class would have some time to talk about their partners in Sohar class. Then, they would compare their own e-mail (the first e-mail they sent to Sohar class) with the first e-mail they have got from Sohar class.

3. In each group, students would have collected some information about different banks and bank facilities using questionnaires, interviews and by gathering some publications from banks (they were asked to prepare this task in the previous lesson and they got a day off to do that). In each group, the students will discuss and analyze their questionnaires and interviews and they will organize the information they have got. After that, there will be an open discussion in the class in which the representative of each group explains to the other groups the kind of information collected by his/her group.

4. Then, each group will transform its information in either a chart or graph (what best suites their organization). They already know how to do that because all of them took a course about the use of Microsoft Office (including EXCEL, the program used to produce these charts and graphs).

5. After finishing this, each group will show its work to the teacher and will get his comments on what they have done. Each group will send its work including the information, the charts and graphs to their key pal partner group.

Notice:

Throughout the lesson, the teacher will be monitoring the work, offering help and advice when needed, moving around the groups to make sure all the group members are involved in the work. He/she will not try to change the content of what each group has done because the content is meant to be the students’ own ideas and production. He/she is more like a facilitator and a guide in the class rather than as a dictator who imposes his/her ideas and instructions upon the students (He/she would be MORE as a guide on the side rather than as a sage on the stage).

Week Two: Tuesday Lesson for SQU Class (Time: 1.30)

1. Each group in the SQU class will receive a response from their counterparts in Sohar class with some comments and suggestions on the work. Then, the students in each group will discuss together these comments and suggestions and will make whatever change is required on the work.

2. After that, an open discussion will be held and each group will try to explain what they would include in their report. Also, each group will be asked to give more suggestions and opinions to the other groups so that they help each other improving their works.

3. Then, each group prepares a report in which they recommend a certain bank because of the good facilities it provides to its customers. Then, each group sends its report to their counterpart in Sohar class so as to get more comments and suggestions from them.

4. Each group in SQU class will receive the work of their counterparts in Sohar class. They will comment on their work and provide them with some suggestions where needed. Then, they will send these comments and suggestions back to the students in Sohar class.

Week Three: Saturday Lesson for SQU Class (Time: 1.30)

1. Each group will receive its report back with the comments and suggestions made by their counterpart in Sohar class. The students in each group will discuss the suggestions given by their keypal partner and they will make whatever change is needed.

2. A class discussion will be held and each group will be asked to report back to the rest of the groups in the class and to explain what would they include in their final report.

3. The students in each group will make use of the comments and suggestions of their Keypal partner group as well as their colleagues in the same class when preparing the final draft. Finally, they would post the final draft in the discussion forum on the Keypal Website, on the following address:

4. The teacher will introduce the students to the next task and he/she will explain how and what the students are supposed to do and to prepare for the next lesson. He/she will also answer any query made by the students on the new task and he/she would provide them with some advice on how to collect the required information.

Appendix 2: A/ A sample lesson from the Keypalling project

Week Two: Saturday Lesson for SQU Class (Time: 1.30)

1. You will receive an e-mail from your keypal partner in Sohar class. This e-mail will include background information about your partners and the subjects they are studying, their University, their teachers and the educational system in Sohar University. The aim of this e-mail is to make you familiar with the other class and to help you make friendship with them before you start the actual work.

2. After you receive the e-mail, discuss what your partners have mentioned. Compare the information in the e-mail you have sent to them with the information in the e-mail you have received from them. Are there any differences between the two Universities?

3. Now, try to analyze and discuss the information you have got about the banks and the different facilities they provide (they were asked to prepare this task in the previous lesson and they had one day off to do that). After you finish, tell the other groups in the class about your bank and listen to what they say about their banks. Compare the facilities provided by the different banks.

4. Now, transform the final information you have got into charts or graphs (what best suites your organization of the content).

5. Finally, show your work to the teacher and get some suggestions or comments on your work. Then, send your information and graphs to your keypal partner in Sohar class.

In this 21st century the volume of information is so high that no single individual can be in the position to contain it as it is today. The increase in information has without a deliberate effort caused a corresponding increase in the knowledge and quantum of information student teachers in our tertiary Institutions are expected to cope with. Our experiences have shown that the expansion of curricular with the inclusion of new subjects and courses and the frequent review of the content of the existing ones to include new topics, have given rise to what may be called today knowledge and information implosion. This is the situation where our learners even our student-teachers are expected to cope with a lot of information, knowledge and skills from a barrage of sources and presented in a wide variety of modes and media. Knowledge explosion as it is presently witnessed in this century has given rise to certain educational challenges. These challenges include faster ways of transmitting or disseminating knowledge and different modes of communication that will be very effective and efficient. These and other challenges can be sufficiently addressed by the use of newer media and techniques. For instance, apart from other qualities of the information and communication technologies (ICT), it makes information transmission faster, more effective and learner friendly. The introduction of ICT based education is, among others, an attempt to meet these educational challenges. This exemplified in the fourth edition (2004) of the National Policy on Education (NPE) which clearly states the broad objectives of Educational services under which Education Resource centers (ERC) are established to house Instructional Resources.

According to Oby (2000) Educational Resource Center is a place where learning Materials, services and Facilities are acquired, produced, classified and stored for easy retrieval when

needed. This education Enterprise encourages Interaction and cross-breeds ideas for the end users.

Oby (2000) identified different names given to Educational resource Center to include but not limited to media center, Learning Resource center, Resource Center, Center for curriculum and Instructional development.

Instructional Resources

The term resource like instructional material are those materials that carry information required by learners. Our environment is filled with such materials and channels which range from simple materials such as the drums, money, slides, charts to complex media. Such as television, computers and satellite.

According to Walton (1975) in Ike (2006) in current usage resources include the hardware and software that in less recent times were called “teaching aid” Systems concept obsolete the once familiar views of media as “instructional aid”. They also stressed that media alone can teach when thoughtfully programmed and when presented in an environment conducive for learning.

Ike (2006) observes that a resource includes anything which may be an object of study or stimulus for the learner, including books, periodicals, newspaper, radio, television programs, videotapes, compact disc, flash drives, as well as individuals and objects in the community. Walton (1975) in Ike (2006) describes a resource as everything which is planned to contribute to the education enterprise and they include school plant, teachers, materials and equipment, the school environment, national parks, museums, libraries and institutions which contribute to the educational enterprise. In all, these resources could be categorized as follows: Realia, Visual, audio, audio visual, simulation and games, community based and electronic. These instructional resources are better managed and organized in resource centers.

Resource Centers

There are reforms in most sectors of our economy. The educational sector is not an exception. Therefore, the present education reforms going on in Nigeria since 1999 are Governments response to non-performance of the sector. Especially the products of the systems are not meeting the needs of the society. It was also identified and pursued that in trying to rebuild and make the system functional, there was a need to start from the basic ingredient of learning. That basic ingredient is availability of instructional resources.

The instructional resources are managed and organized in resource center. According to Ngoka (1995). Resource center is a service area providing for the use and distribution of information to students and teachers in multimedia forms to facilitate the teaching and learning process.

According to Dike (1988) in Eze (2002:48) Resource Centre is a

building in or outside the school system with adequate spaces, staff, software and hardware materials, where learners may go and study either individually or in a group or consult with staff of the centre and where facilities exist for determining individual differences and where instructional materials tailored to meet there individual differences of learners can be produce, utilized and disseminated.

Eze (2002:49) sees it as an area, or complex of areas

equipped with diversity of print and non-print media material, types of audio-visual equipment and programmed instruction, and designed to various learning styles and needs both through physical design and through the application of a systematic process approach to individualization of instruction.

Resource centre therefore should provide enough information, regarding location, organization, material and resources person outside the institution, which will enhance and promote learning. A resources centre for the 21st century should have space for various types of activities. The equipment for the best practice for the production of instructional materials, reprographic unit, recording studio, computer terminals, and photographic darkroom.

A cursory look at the description of Resource centre, it could be seen that Resource centre stresses on individualization of instruction and the development of life relevant process skills in the learners. A resource centre can be either centralized, decentralized, or co-ordinate, depending on many factor, such as; fund, objectives of the organization and available resources (Abimbade 1999)

Beeswick (1972) in Ike (2006) described a resource centre as an agency for stimulating the active creation and use of a resource collection including the six elements of:

Production of home-made resources
Selection and acquisition of other resources
Classification and indexing of retrieval
Storage
Use, including guidance, lending and borrowing.
Evaluation and weeding of obsolete media.

However, the National Policy on education (NPE2004) has given the broad objectives of a typical resource Centre as follows

develop assess and improve educational programmes.

ii. enhance teaching and improve the competence of the teacher.

make learning experiences more meaningful to the learner.

iv. make education more cost effective.

v. develop and promote an effective use of innovative materials in schools.

vi. promote in-service education

promote the use of ICTs in schools

it should be noted that resource collection simply means a multiplicity of such items gathered by various individuals. The items and activities coordinated by a resource centre may not always be centralized in one place, but maybe where there is a space, provided for its establishment.

The activities of a resource center can be located at different areas of the college compound in that situation, the activities will be centrally controlled. That means all the activities will be regarded as parts of one total set-up called centre for educational technology(CET) in Colleges of education, Polytechnics and Universities.

Centre for Educational Technology (C.E.T)

Centre for Educational Technology is a resource centre set-up In Colleges of Education, Polytechnics and Universities. Colleges of Education for instance produce N.C.E graduates for Primary and secondary Schools and first degrees in collaboration with cooperating universities. A model CET in the 21st century according to Ike (2006) is expected to perform the following function.

build up a pool of basic instructional materials
acquired relevant instructional materials
Providing campus electronic communication media services for academic services, administrative staff and students.
Providing professional assistance to staff and students in the design, production, utilization and administration of instructional materials.
Providing training in the use of educational media for the student and staff of the institution.
Organizing workshops, seminars, orientations for students staff and other media users on the use of media for the teaching and learning process.
Coordinating and providing communications services for lecturers, instructors and other college functions (video coverage, public address, projectors, radio and close circuit television systems).
Planning and carrying out research activities in the field of educational technology.

Organization of Centre for Educational Technology.

The Centre for Educational Technology in tertiary institutions are very central in the academic and non academic functions of the institutions. CET is aimed at promoting and ensuring effective and also efficient teaching-learning process. It is also devoted to rendering general services to the institutional immediate community. Organization therefore has to do with the day to day running of CET.

Academic Organization.

CET takes the teaching and learning process beyond the conventional classroom to an interactive and activity based process. This is often done in a simulated microteaching lesson. The microteaching cycle gives the student-teacher opportunity to practice and acquire the skills one at a time for eventual use in the primary and secondary schools. This microteaching process is a cyclic activity which is devoted to the practice of one component of the skill. In Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, the Microteaching cycle is completed within two weeks. In the first week the student-teachers plan-practice-observe(critique). In the second week the student teachers replan – repractise – reobserve.

Student-teachers are not made passive listeners using only their imagination in the course of learning in the simulated microteaching lesson in the laboratory. The student-teachers are made to play an active role so that they understand the relationship between theory and practice.

ii. Instructional Resource Section.

Instructional Resource Section of CET is where various categories of the materials are on identified on shelves for easy retrieval. The materials are carefully labeled and placed for all to see. However the non-identified materials are grouped based on the subject areas they cover in the curricular; labeled and placed accordingly on the shelves. Graphic materials such as graphs, posters and charts can be laminated and hung around the room.

iii. Graphic section.

In this section, the Graphic Artist scripts documents and produces identification labels used in instructional resource section. The College and school certificates and properties can be scripted and identified here

iv. Photographic Section.

The photographic section handles all the photographic needs of the College and schools within the laboratory.

v. Electronic Section.

In A.I.F.C.E. Owerri, this section takes care of the slides, audio and video tapes, video players and projectors. Maintenance of these equipment are also done in this section.

Management of Centre For Educational Technology.

Educational Technology Centre from our discussion so far is good example of Educational Resource Centre. Its management in 21st century involves shifting from theory to practice in our schools. Management of Educational resource centre therefore includes running, administration and controlling of the activities to ensure effective pedagogy in Nigerian schools. To manage Centre for Educational technology therefore, there is need to have professionals who must be present to function in every position. The positions required for Centre for Educational Technology in University and Colleges of Education are shown below graphically.

One of the functions of CET in the tertiary institutions as indicated earlier include “providing, professional assistance to the staff and students in the design, production and administration of Media Materials for the improvement of teaching and learning.

A good resource centre therefore should have the following professionals.

- Educational Technologists;

- Language specialists

- Graphic Artists and Assistants

- Photographer and Assistants

- Librarian and Tutor librarians

- Reprographic Materials

The above Staffers can be grouped into:

(1) Professional Media Specialist Staff. This caliber of Staff must be university graduates with a good background as an educational technologist. The head of CET must be drawn from this Group: most of the time they are lecturers and Media Librarian.

(2) Administrative Support Staff. This group of staff is drawn from the registry Department. They include Administrative officers, Executive Officers, Clerical Officer Typists, Drivers and finance officers.

(3) Technical Staff: the technical Staff is drawn from the works Department in the area of design, installation, operation and maintenance. The staff may include Engineers, Technical Officers/Technologists and Craftsmen.

The above staff members in the CET management team are there for the needs of the primary and secondary pupils and student Instructional Need of School.

Instructional Needs for schools.

The essence of the new basic education has significantly the need for instructional materials at all levels of schooling. This is relevant since it is believed that instructional materials ensure the effectiveness of the teaching and learning through, among others concretizing ideas, engendering creativity. Such effectiveness is predicated in the obvious advantages which instructional materials inject into teaching and learning situations. In line with the foregoing Hoban et al in Nwosu (1991) & Ike, Chimezie & Iwu 2002 had asserted that when properly used instructional Materials could achieve:

1) Supply a concrete basis for conceptual thinking and reduced meaningless word responses.

2) make learning more permanent]they have high degree of interest in pupils

3) offer a reality of experience which stimulates self activity on the part of pupils.

Adequate use of relevant materials would help the teachers effort, such that he could be more efficient and effective in his teaching. For example, he can use the materials to guide thinking, when he wants to discuss concepts that are too abstract for the pupils level, like in the teaching space travels or the space exploration. The teacher can therefore use the needed materials to present the facts and information to his pupils. It is therefore expected that student-teachers in their design and production of instructional materials, they should be tailored to the curricular content of various levels of pupils in our schools. This is imperative because schools may request these instructional materials for their classroom instruction.

Production of Instructional Materials by Students-Teachers

No medium can be all things to all learners. The best that can happen is to meet his learning needs. To meet these needs. Local production is often required local production can be the result of definite request from primary and secondary schools. As it is done by staff demonstration schools at Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education (AIFCE)

The Locally produced media at AIFCE are more receptive to the three general characteristics of effectiveness. i.e relevance, fit and validation. The Local Production is accomplished better because it is supervised and conducted by a production specialist.

Special Services to Primary and secondary schools

Educational Resource Centre has the potentials to serve the educational Interests of Primary and Secondary Schools in Nigeria through Special Exhibitions, and Auditorium Programme.

Special Exhibitions of instructional Materials are designed to encourage self-instruction on the part of Young People. This approach was simple-narrative labeling, including audio-Visual devices aimed at attracting attention. Stimulating Interest and Providing graphic or dramatic explanation.

Auditorium Programmes according to Onyejemezi (1991) have been tried including educational and documentary films, illustrated with slides, Films, power points, Video Films, Compact Disc, Digital Video Disc. Lecturers offering social programmes for Pupils or teachers during Long Vacations, may use this as all enrichment exercise.

Another approach of offering School Services is through providing for Primary and Secondary Schools on a regular intervals, distribution of ERC materials which may be Used by the Teachers for Instructions.

RECOMMENDATION

Educational Resource Center is pivotal and highly needed in teaching and learning in our primary and Secondary Schools. Teachers in these Schools should be knowledgable both in content and resources needed to drive home the curricular content. In view of this we make the following recommendations.

Head teachers and Principals should encourage their teachers to visit Educational Resource Centers of tertiary Institutions in their environment.
Student-Teachers in our tertiary Institutions should be asked to produce instructional Material that will meet the instructional needs of a particular level of our School System.
Students should be made to produce different types of instructional Material on a given topic or content.
Centers for Educational Technology in our tertiary institutions should have an Educational Technologist as Head.
Centers for Educational Technology should be Organised and Managed to meet the needs and challenges of its immediate environment.
Primary and secondary School Teachers should be trained and re-trained in the art and science of teaching using the skills.
Teachers in our school systems should be exposed to the appropriate Utilization and production techniques for effective teaching.

Conclusion

The concept of Educational Resource Centre in our tertiary Institution is anchored on the fact that it is one of the best strategies for creating institutional readiness for Instructional Innovation using the instructional materials.

In an attempt to ensure maximum teaching and effective learning in our schools, Centre for Educational Technology is mandated to design, produce instructional materials that are tailored to the needs of the pupils and student in our schools. These instructional materials are stored In a specialized place for the safe keep and easy retrieval system when needed.

This place called Centre for Education Technology is managed by highly professional staff who ensures that the objectives of the centre are maintained for the services of the students and immediate environment.

Material Science can be defined as understanding the potentials of this material universe and then making apt use of them. On the other hand Spiritual Science deals with the advancement of our consciousness so as to attain eternal unlimited bliss (Ananda). Human beings need to pay heed to both these in a balanced manner. Based on spiritual tenets Vital Force consciousness is made balanced in an optimal fashion. The physical body is made up of matter and hence materials are required to maintain a sound healthy body. In order to lead a balanced life both these are very essential for world humanity. If only spirituality and modern science work together in a healthy balanced manner can individuals and the entire world, lead a life of material comforts and spiritual bliss.

And yet it is our ill fate today that the gigantic potentials of materialism and spiritualism refuse to work in tandem with one another in a healthy cooperative manner. Forget cooperation both are at loggerheads with each other and are busy casting aspersions on each other. Modern Science virtually scoffs at the existence of God, our soul and fruits of actions (Karma Phala). Those who believe in only that knowledge/proof dished out by our 5 senses (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin) also believe in only the utility of ‘I’ and ‘mine’ and nothing beyond that. With the result man has not only become an atheist but unethical too. Since a major chunk of world humanity follow rank materialism and nothing beyond that their thinking too has become blind and deluded. Today selfishness, unruliness and terrorist activities are ruling the roost. This has totally weakened individual characters and a sense of oneness with the world has disappeared into thin air. No doubt Modern Science has advanced our economic and intellectual prowess in a manifold manner and yet unfortunately immense distortions too have simultaneously grown like weeds in man’s conscious arena. Dangers and clouds of destruction are looming large all over the globe. It seems as though the days of super destruction are just round the corner.

After having said all this it is now the turn of Spiritual Sciences. They have failed to give healthy logical answers to the allegations made by Modern Science against them. Not only this spirituality angrily lashed out at science and set up an illusory dream like world for itself where science was refused entry. Obviously the vast intellectual class got irked and labeled Spiritual Science as a set of blind beliefs and means of fulfilling selfish unbecoming desires. With the result spirituality remained demeaned and man’s material prowess got a shock. World humanity has sadly lost all those benefits ere had Spiritual Sciences and Material Sciences worked in healthy tandem with one another. Today world individuals face debacle and the globe’s all round balance too has become grim. Only those subtle seers of the world who have gauged the havoc inflicted on the layman’s life, world management etc by all these developments. These great seers naturally are worried and uneasy if a solution is not found and applied immediately.

Today in the world the need of the hour is that modern science and spirituality, matter and consciousness work in whole hearted cooperation with one another. As a result an individual’s glory and world management can reach higher peaks of all round advancement. In order to target this super goal Brahmavarchas Research Institute (Address: Shantikunj, Haridwar, Uttaranchal, India, website: www.awgp.org) is conducting research studies in a very scientific manner so that modern science and spiritual sciences work in smooth tandem with one another. This mutual cooperation can be compared to the Samudra Manthan or ‘Churning of the Ocean’ as depicted in Indian Mythology called Puranas.
